Domestic workers in Welkom are warned not to grant supposed municipal workers sent by their employer, entry to their employers’ homes.
According to a police statement, on 21 December, at about 11:00, a 51-year-old domestic worker was busy at the washing line in the back of her employer’s yard in Harmse Street, Naudeville.
After responding to a knock at the gate, she was confronted by three men who claimed to be from the Matjhabeng Municipality, coming to check the water meter reading, as requested by her employer. The domestic worker was, allegedly, reluctant to grant them access but they persisted until she opened the gate for them.
The men overpowered her and forced their way into the house. The domestic worker was bound and had her head covered with a blanket while the men proceeded to the main bedroom.
When things had quieted down, the domestic worker claims she managed to untie herself, and then informed her employer of what happened.
After a thorough inspection of the house, the following items were missing: two wrist watches, Gucci and Versace perfume, and a remote control.
The three suspects were wearing blue jeans, blue top overalls, green reflector jackets, and had their faces covered with masks. A case of house robbery was registered for further investigation.
Anyone with information that can help police apprehend these suspects, can contact Capt. Yolanda Hulme of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes on 082-493-1204, or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
