The electricity supply to residents in the Winburg area was interrupted last night because of copper cable theft.

According to a news release by Stephanie Jansen van Rensburg, communications practitioner at Escom in Bloemfontein, electricity to customers feeding from three rural lines in the Winburg area has been interrupted since last night due to copper cable theft at the Winburg Rural Substation.

She says repairs to the substation will take at least a full day to complete due to extensive damage caused by the perpetrators.

The affected feeders are Winburg-Witval, Winburg-Aldam and Winburg-Erfenis.

“Eskom condemns such criminal acts that lead to increased discomfort to customers. In the interest of all electricity users, we urge the public to immediately report any suspicious activities related to Eskom infrastructure to the police or to relevant safety and security structures. Alternatively, contact the Eskom Contact Centre at 08600 ESKOM / 37566 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.
