Workshop helps parents

After the colourful Wall of Remembrance, as well as the play area, at the Sunflower Children’s Hospice was recently renovated, the inner walls will now also be refreshed.

This is thanks to Gr. 9 learners of the Sentraal High School recently visiting Sunflower House at the hospice to donate nappies, and then obtaining a paint voucher from Impa Paints to give the play area inside the house a new lease on life.

“It is wonderful what these learners did to help us improve the hospice,” says Joan Marston, founder and director of Sunflower House, commenting that some of the rooms need tender loving care to make the children feel more welcome.

The Sunflower Children’s Hospice, celebrating its 25th birthday this year, is the oldest hospice in South Africa and possibly Africa.

Marston, who has been teaching children’s palliative care in many countries and who is the vice-president of the Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation, will facilitate a workshop for parents who need to talk to children about topics such as illness and death.

“The aim is to help adults to respond to children’s questions and verbal and non-verbal communication about these issues,” she explains.

One workshop is presented on Saturday, 16 September, from 11:30 to 13:00; and another on Saturday, 23 September, from 14:00 to 15:30. To attend, dial 082-296-4367, or send a WhatsApp message or an email to sunflower007@telkomsa.net.
