In commemoration of this year’s World Food Day celebrated on 16 October, which is urging action that promotes inclusivity and the building of sustainable food systems for everyone everywhere, a group of Woolworths employees in Bloemfontein did their part.
Employeens from the branches in the Loch Logan Waterfront, Preller Square, Fleurdal, Northridge and Langenhoven Park rolled up their sleeves and went to work in the food garden at ForAfrika’s Oreratile Day care centre.
This funding enabled them to train community members from vulnerable households as small-scale farmers so that they can grow fresh produce at five early childhood development centres like Oreratile Day care centre.
“It was a wonderful opportunity for us to visit Oreratile Day care centre and work alongside the community members in their food garden and meet the children,” said SF Naude, Operations Department Manager Woolworths Northridge Mall. “Thanks to everyone for making today possible, it was a fantastic experience, we all learned so much from today. Keep up the great work.”
Zinzi Mgolodela, Woolworths Corporate Affairs Director. said the group acknowledged on 16 October the World Food Day theme: Leave no one behind. “This calls for all of us to go out into our communities to help build a sustainable world where everyone, everywhere has regular access to enough nutritious food and a #zerohunger world by 2030.
“For many years Woolworths has been working to make a sustainable and positive impact on alleviating hunger in South Africa. We believe that food security and access to food is a fundamental human right and have over this last year donated over R6 million to organisations, like ForAfrika South Africa to empower communities across South Africa to grow more food and become food secure.”
